2015 – Allaway Family: Simmonne, Brian, and William
From modest beginnings in 1982 as a backyard family hobby, the Allaway family has followed their passion for Nova Scotia maple syrup in the creation of Acadian Maple Products, a gourmet food supplier with worldwide markets. Their entrepreneurial efforts have contributed hugely to raising awareness of Nova Scotia maple syrup and they provide a ready market for bulk producers of maple syrup in the province. Their emphasis on food safety and quality contribute to raising standards in production and ensure an image of excellence for Nova Scotia maple syrup. Acadian Maple has been the recipient of several industry association awards including the 2014 Outstanding Exporter Award, Atlantic Canada Craft Awards for Excellence.
On their way to establishing a successful business employing upwards of 20 Nova Scotians and attracting some 30,000 visitors annually in the agri-tourism component at the Acadian Maple plant in Tantallon the family has volunteered countless hours, days and weeks of effort over more than 30 years to the Maple Producers Association of Nova Scotia and the work of growing the maple industry in Nova Scotia. Brian has served 6 years as a director of MPANS, including as President in 2007 and 2008. He has been a Nova Scotia representative on the Canadian Maple Industry Advisory Committee since the founding of this national group of maple producing provinces in 2006. William has served 3 years as a director including as President in 2011, several years as our website developer and webmaster and as a founding member of the Maple Research Steering Committee where he continues to serve. Simonne and Brian took leadership roles in hosting the international meetings of the North American Maple Syrup Council and the International Maple Syrup Institute in Nova Scotia in 2003, and Brian, Simonne and William were leaders again in hosting the 2014 conference. The 2003 and 2014 conferences were both profit making for MPANS, a testimony to the entrepreneurial abilities of its organizers. The high praise from participants in the 2014 conference is an indication of how well Nova Scotia has been represented to the international maple community.
We are proud to induct the Allaway family in the Maple Producers Association of Nova Scotia Hall of Fame in recognition of their tireless efforts in promoting Nova Scotia maple syrup both domestically and worldwide, in appreciation of their uncompromising standards of food safety and quality and with gratitude for their outstanding contributions to MPANS and the advancement of the maple industry in Nova Scotia.
